Our Approach to Learning

At SIA, learning integrates three complementary dimensions:

Study — engaging ideas with depth and reflection
Practice — applying insight to everyday life and relationships
Creative Expression — using the arts as a pathway to understanding and integration

This approach supports growth that is thoughtful, embodied, and meaningful.

Learning at SIA is open to:

  • individuals exploring spirituality for the first time

  • those seeking thoughtful and structured study

  • creatives interested in the connection between art and spirituality

This course provides instruction and experience in preparation and delivery of speeches within a public setting and group discussion. Emphasis is placed on research, preparation, delivery, and evaluation of informative, persuasive, and special occasion public speaking. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare and deliver well-organized speeches and participate in group discussions with appropriate audiovisual support. This course is designed to cover the basics of effective public speaking and build confidence in speakers. By giving opportunities to make several
speeches in a smaller, controlled setting, the class will encourage familiarity with speaking in front of others through practice in an encouraging, non-threatening atmosphere.

The two main styles of delivery to be covered are:

Improvisation, or improv, which is the ability to deliver a speech by thinking of what you will say as you say it and not preparing it beforehand.

Extemporaneous speaking, which is a method of delivering a speech where the speaker has prepared thoroughly in advance but does not memorize the exact words. Instead, they use notes or outlines as prompts and deliver the speech in a conversational, natural style.
